Whenthetea-thingswereremoved，andthecard-tablesplaced，theladiesallrose，andElizabethwasthenhopingtobesoonjoinedbyhim，whenallherviewswereoverthrownbyseeinghimfallavictimtohermothersrapacityforwhistplayers，andinafewmomentsafterseatedwiththerestoftheparty。Shenowlosteveryexpectationofpleasure。Theywereconfinedfortheeveningatdifferenttables，andshehadnothingtohope，butthathiseyesweresooftenturnedtowardshersideoftheroom，astomakehimplayasunsuccessfullyasherself。

Mrs。Bennet，inshort，wasinverygreatspirits;shehadseenenoughofBingleysbehaviourtoJane，tobeconvincedthatshewouldgethimatlast;andherexpectationsofadvantagetoherfamily，wheninahappyhumour，weresofarbeyondreason，thatshewasquitedisappointedatnotseeinghimthereagainthenextday，tomakehisproposals。

Elizabethsmiled。

“Lizzy，youmustnotdoso。Youmustnotsuspectme。Itmortifiesme。IassureyouthatIhavenowlearnttoenjoyhisconversationasanagreeableandsensibleyoungman，withouthavingawishbeyondit。Iamperfectlysatisfied，fromwhathismannersnoware，thatheneverhadanydesignofengagingmyaffection。Itisonlythatheisblessedwithgreatersweetnessofaddress，andastrongerdesireofgenerallypleasing，thananyotherman。”
